Modern Theatre Dance (ISTD)
A dynamic, expressive style rooted in rhythm, storytelling, and show-stopping performance.
Established in 1904, the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) is one of the world’s oldest and most respected dance examination boards. With a legacy of excellence spanning over a century, the ISTD has continually evolved to embrace new techniques and genres, shaping generations of dancers and teachers across the globe.
Today, the ISTD proudly offers 12 specialised dance faculties, making it the most comprehensive examination board in terms of style and scope. From classical ballet to contemporary street styles, ISTD qualifications are globally recognised for their quality, structure, and integrity.
Modern Theatre Dance, one of the core ISTD genres, is a rhythmic and expressive style that originated in America and quickly became a global stage favourite. Often seen in West End and Broadway musicals, Modern Theatre is known for its theatrical flair, high energy, and dynamic choreography.
In this class, students will learn to combine technique with performance, using:
- Travelling steps & stylised walks
- High kicks, leaps, and dynamic turns
- Rhythmic coordination and body control
- Expressive movement that brings music to life
Modern Theatre Dance encourages not only technical discipline but also creativity and stage presence, making it ideal for dancers who love to perform and tell stories through movement.
Our ISTD Modern classes follow a structured syllabus that supports dancers as they progress through grades, with opportunities to take examinations and develop both artistic and physical skills in a supportive environment.
Whether your child dreams of dancing in musicals or simply wants to improve flexibility, strength, and confidence, Modern Theatre Dance at Spotlight is an exciting and inspiring choice.
