Dance Examinations at Spotlight & JC School of Dance
At Spotlight and JC, we are proud to offer students the opportunity to take internationally recognised dance examinations through two of the world’s most prestigious awarding bodies:

RAD – Royal Academy of Dance (Ballet)

ISTD – Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (Tap and Modern Theatre)

Examinations are not compulsory, but they are highly encouraged, as they offer students a clear goal to work toward and a deep sense of pride and achievement upon completion. These structured assessments are a valuable way to track progress, build technical foundations, and celebrate each dancer’s journey.

RAD Ballet and ISTD Tap exams have long been part of our curriculum, with ISTD Modern Theatre Dance proudly added to the timetable from September 2019. These examinations are carefully integrated into our training programmes to support every student’s development.

The benefits of taking dance exams include:

  • Boosted confidence and self-esteem
  • Encouragement of dedication, discipline, and teamwork
  • A measurable way to mark personal progress and success
  • Development of technical precision, artistry, and performance skills
  • Recognition that supports further education and career pathways

UCAS Points & Higher Education
From Grade 6 and above, RAD and ISTD graded and vocational exams earn UCAS points, which can be used to support university and higher education applications in the UK. These qualifications not only reflect a student’s commitment and talent in the performing arts but can also make a meaningful contribution to academic advancement.

Exam Entry & Process
Students are invited to enter for exams only when ready, based on the professional discretion of their teacher and the Principal. This ensures that each child feels confident, prepared, and set up for success.

In RAD Ballet, some pupils may be invited to take a Presentation or Class Award, which are alternative assessment options that still provide valuable feedback and recognition, especially for those earlier in their dance journey.

Examination sessions are held most terms, depending on candidate readiness and scheduling.

Additional Requirements for Exam Students
To meet the high standards set by the RAD and ISTD:

  • Students taking only one class per week must attend a second weekly coaching class during the examination term.
  • For vocational RAD examinationsprivate coaching is required to help students reach the level of performance expected by the Academy.

These accredited exams provide more than just a certificate, they nurture confidence, celebrate hard work, and open doors to further artistic and academic opportunities. Please speak to your teacher if you’d like to know more about your child’s next steps toward examination entry. We’re here to support every dancer’s journey, on and beyond the stage.
